Well, 2011 was a wild year, by the standards of this relatively homebody project.

I played more shows this year than I ever have in any other year (four, at random places across Atlanta), and it was very interesting to try to make my bedroom music work in public.

This year, I had three official releases come out, the digital EPs "Starry Way" and "New Pilgrimage" and the full length album "Wild Silver." Thanks goes to Gavin from Stickfigure and Mason Brown for making the album and its release possible. These releases, in combination with my work on the Roman Photos and Kolossi EPs kept me pretty busy.

The Atlanta press has been very receptive to what I know is still fairly "out there" music to some people, and I truly appreciate it. Thanks to Latest Disgrace especially for the gracious write ups, they even mentioned Wild Silver in their "Top 25 Atlanta Releases of 2011"!

Coming up, I'm working on a split C30 with Repeated Viewing and another full length album I've titled "Heavens Above, Heavens Below" at this point.

Thanks to those who came out to the Music Room last night, and to the other bands that played. My next show is Saturday the 25th at the Little Advances House. I think I play first.

I was thinking today about how great this first Lyonnais album is, if you have a chance take a listen to the player below. Lyonnais are one of the best bands in Atlanta, so check out their hearty mix of post-punk and drone... it's something different. They pressed the album onto tape and I think you can still message them through their Facebook page to get a copy.

hey,

Things have been different down here in Atlanta of late (lots going on, Roman Photos being busy), so I'm going to try some new things with my next Warning Light release. I'll be working on some music videos and delaying the Wild Silver project for a while. My roomate Phil and I have been talking alot of video of late, and it seems like an interesting thing to work on.

Oh, and maybe I'll start working on a collection of nature photography and deep drone music, but that idea is still kind of in the fomative stage.

I've talked to Gavin from Stickfigure, and it looks like they'll be putting out the next Warning Light album Wild Silver. So hopefully if I stay on track, it will be out sometime next Spring. My live partner Allen (Feast of Violet) will probably appear on a couple of tracks, as will a few other mystery guests. This album is definitely a bit more "soundtrack"-y than straight up droney, but there's a little bit of all of it in there. Plus, maybe a piano ballad.

I'm also pressing a small amount of Fallow CDrs on my Beacon Light Communications boutique label, so message me if you'd like a copy.

Also, there's a tape version of the Lotus Plaza / Warning Light / Young Again show at the Eyedrum floating around. It was reviewed in Creative Loafing here. I have no idea how you get one, although getting in touch with Robby at Eyedrum would probably be the place to start. The cover apparently looks like this (although I have yet to see an actual copy):

As the seasons change on me again, I've got to say projects feel like they are shifting around me. Every time I think about doing something harsher with guitars/drone again, little ideas pop up more in the melodic, synthesizers and loops world.

So back into Wild Silver I go. For now.

The good parts I feel like I've finally salvaged and put together with some newer straight drone stuff, a collection of which I'm calling the Mythrum LP. It should be ready at the end of the year.

Also, I've talked to some people about mastering Fallow. We'll see. At the rate I'm going, Wild Silver will be done before Fallow (which is sad, because the video for Fallow seems to be taking even longer). Oh well.

I thought the work on the Fallow soundtrack was done, but some new ideas randomly overtook me so I'm back to it again. More beats, more drones, more everything. The cameos from other musicians still haven't materialized, but the album is getting denser and more varied.

Well, the album is finally out.

And Fallow is finally done being recorded, sitting on the shelf, waiting for someone to release it in some form.

Which leaves me with... well, for a time really nothing. I've been working on new music with my band Roman Photos, so I haven't thought too much about Warning Light. But then last weekend, I got out my old Casio CZ 3000 and started working on new music. I haven't really used that synthesizer much since Warning Light 2, so it's strange to be playing it again. But now that I know more about electronics, I know how to play the thing. So I'm working on a new more upbeat piece of work called Wild Silver for now. I have no idea what will come of it, a couple of songs for the internet or a whole album. Who knows. I'll have a song finished and put up sometime soon.

2010 junk thoughts

Well well. With Further On out, I have the time to doodle on a myriad of projects. The full band I'm in, Roman Photos is playing a bunch of shows and trying to get two 7"s done this Spring.

Work on Fallow, the next full length Warning Light album is still going on... I've been juggling ideas to round out the collection, but I can say it will most likely be the ten songs I've been working with for the past seven months or so. The album is shaping up to be about 50 minutes to one hour, and it has a bunch of different sounds and textures.

I've been talking to Allen and we're going to work on a professional sounding Warning Light Ensemble full length as well. Hopefully we'll have some major work on that done by summer.

And thanks to KUCI for putting my album in the top 30 for the week. Exciting stuff.

5 weird but good records from 2009:

I listened to a ton of records last year, and while this isn't even my top ten, I wanted to write about five unique things I listened to last year.

- Akiro Kosemura "Polaroid Piano" Pianos and guitars hover around amidst atmospheric recordings, this album manages to sound randomly forward thinking by never falling into the traps of sounding too "lo-fi." It sounds intimate without being sappy, it's just a little island unto itself.

-- Wolves in the Throneroom "Black Cascade" Metal in a year that I didn't really listen to metal... this album was a slow grower for me and like the Krallice album in 2008 became my choice for weird, near mystical metal.

--- Alfheimr "These Songs We Sing Will Fade to Silence" Not quite postrock but definitely in that vein, and I haven't really been listening to anything like this lately. But this album has enough variety and textures to keep my interest, go figure.

---- Landing "You Can't Hide Your Love Forever v.5" Mind boggling single from a band I've loved for years, it's two delicate pieces of bedroom/brain music. I'm glad they're back.

----- Subway "Subway II" Kraut-y, groovy dance music with tons of synthesizers and great percussion patterns, as good for dancing as driving around by yourself at night.

A couple months ago I got a Crumar Orchestrator from all around good guy Travis Thatcher; so my newest synthesizer is actually the oldest one. It's a great piece of equipment though, the string sounds can be modified quite a bit, and you can make some pretty buzzy low end notes. Anyhow, I'm playing it in the upcoming Warning Light show, and it's kind of become my go to synthesizer for string parts.

Fallow work

Today I recorded and mixed two new songs that I had been mulling over for a while for the Fallow album: a short piece with pads and synths called "Sensing Backwards" and a longer drone synth number I'm calling "Pools of Time" for now. I managed to get the edits done on "Awaiting the Gates" and fix up a basic tracklisting. The album is still short a song, but is nearly 50 minutes as is (people want that?).

Hopefully, this next one won't take as long as Further On to come out.

Great Records #2

#2. Eliane Radigue "Geelriandre & Arthesis" 1972-1973 French LP. Two pieces, each just shy of thirty minutes, and it's some of the most brilliant work in the minimalism field.

What this record has in spades is subtlety. It blows my mind. The synthesizer is used as a generator of tone, with slight shifts and alterations in sound to create atmosphere. Not really knowing anything about concepts of minimalism won't hurt a listener here; this is just great music.

The label would like a live demonstration sometime around the release of the record in the coming January. I will likely play a slightly abbreviated version of "Sea Rations" from Further On, an old song called "An Early Winter Approaches," an ambient piece "Ringing Over Mountains, Far From Here" and very possibly a new song. I've been trying to come up with a way to make the performance a bit more memorable, hopefully I will come up with something so people won't just have to stare at me playing synthesizers and twiddling knobs.

And on a personal note, several years ago I was lucky enough to be in a band that opened up for Maserati after mr Jerry Fuchs had joined. Not only did we have the great opportunity to begin with, but we got to meet mr Fuchs, and he was a kind gentleman. It was great enough to see him play, but to say hello to a guy who I had listened to in several bands was pretty exciting. He was a huge talent and a genuine nice guy. Goodnight, mr Jerry.

From time to time, I like to write about random records. My hope is that you might track them down and give them a listen.

#1. White Hospital "Holocaust" 1984 Japanese LP. It's not quite what you would think, coming from that scene . This record isn't really in the school of Merzbow or Government Alpha, it's really more avant garde with a tinge of early industrial. It's not "noise" in the newer sense of that genre, just something different. This album is one of the few records I've heard in my lifetime that seemed to really be able to mix beauty and brutality, and to make it work. "Holocaust" really made an impression on me when I first heard it; I even tried for a couple months to start a band called Hospital Whites!

Update on a release date for the Further On CD on Stickfigure Recordings ... they have been talking to me about having it ready to go in January. Yep, January 2010, unless something crazy comes up. And I might play a couple of live demonstrations of certain tracks off the album. I'll keep you updated.

With work on Fallow progressing along, I thought I would post one of the more experimental tracks for your enjoyment. It's a nearly five minute droner that is comprised of found sound and a manipulated synth loop called "Walking Down Your Street":

Sub tones and little things have begun to intrigue me in a very big way. I'm hoping to work them into the next record. I'll be posting a sound collage that is a demo/test run for certain elements of the things I've been working with in the next couple of days. It's alot more chaotic, but it has little textures that I think might be involved.

A vow

Well I vowed not to touch a keyboard for Warning Light related business for a month and I ended up doodling around with tape recorders, making hours of tapes of the city outside my window. Listening to the tapes has recharged my batteries a little- that and listening to Roger Eno. Anyhow, it has me thinking about where this project is going. I want more space in the next recordings. I want huge wide open spaces, like laying in the middle of the field at night, staring up at the stars and not seeing a thing on the horizon, only stars.

So I'm turning back on the keyboards. We'll see what happens.

Oddly

So even though I've been talking about it for over a year, the upcoming CD, now entitled Further On, is finally being mastered for a release on Stickfigure.

Crazy. I don't think I ever would have guessed when I started working on it in late 2007, that it ever would have been such a long road... Three bands came and went, I moved twice, and something in the manner of five other Warning Light releases were recorded in between work on this one record.

Even though the record itself is a kind of fable about the end of human civilization, it also encompasses all the other little things that happened along the way. I dunno if I could have written "Nights on the Vacant Sphere" without visiting NYC for the first time and staying up every night staring at the city below. And some things I had tried to work into other bands I had been in, but none of it had worked until I sat down and made it Warning Light music. Go figure.

With work on Further On completed in late April, I've finally moved on to other music. My hope is to continue in the relatively "pop drone" vein of Further On (hopefully containing a tad more collaboration with other sound artists) with another full length while pursuing new ideas in the "pure atmosphere drone" realm on some new CDrs.

Up in the wilds of North Georgia I recently recorded about an hour of nature sounds to use on my next recording. I've been working on another full length called "Fallow" that will be a more experimental, more atmosphere based.

Different Geographies

2008 was a strange year for Warning Light, though I was able to get a double album of atmospheric drone out in the Spring called "Different Geographies." After the variety and length (78+ min) of 2007's "Eternity Drones" I wasn't sure where I could go next. So I practiced alone for weeks, trying to come up with something new. The album really just takes the extended drone motif from the longer "Eternity Drones" tracks and lets it stretch out to a more relaxed length. It was a bit of an undertaking to juggle over two hours of music into one release, but I think it came out well. "Different Geographies" is definitely a listen that requires patience and is definitely populated with quieter atmospheric drones that alot of the heavy keyboard stuff I do. I'm going to post a few parts for people to download and enjoy.

Track one, "Twilight Across Empty Woodlands" (34:11)

This is the first track of the first disc. While I think this can be enjoyed on its own, this is the piece that sets the tone for the entire double album. It's comprised of crescendos and valleys of pure drone, made from a synthesizer and effects.

Track five, "Oceans Filled with Miniscule Kingdoms" (13:36)

This is the second track of the second disc. It's a shorter piece that utilizes a slow building loop of processed synthesizer drone that fades in and out and plays on differing textures.

If people enjoy, I'll post a little more of this record. I'm pretty sure the Stickfigure Distro still has a few copies of this, but I'm all out.

A new year

After much hassle and such, the Warning Light CD on Stickfigure is closing in on being sent away to be mastered. These are exciting times.

There's a new CDr on Tiny Kraken called "Unknown Clearing" that you might be able to get ahold of, you might not. It's limited to 30 copies. I might post the files on this blog after the CDr is out of print.

Summer

I know it seems like this project has been hibernating all summer, but I actually was fairly busy. Earlier in the summer I recorded and mixed an EP for Atlanta noisenik Rajio called Cast Your Pure Eyes. It ended up coming out on my boutique label Tiny Kraken, in association with Songs About Wizards.

As for strictly Warning Lights activity... I ended up recording an entire album of sythesizer/droney stuff on my parents' computer and it crashed. I'm working on getting a copy of it back. Some of it I would really like to appear on the full length I want to release in the fall.

After putting out Different Geographies this spring, I really wasn't sure where all I could go with this project, but I've had so many ideas this summer I'm going to keep recording. Different Geographies was just a bear of a project, and so I suppose I needed a little time to catch my breath. Anyone considering recording a coherent double CDr collection of ambient traveling music should consider the difficulty of having it fit together. I am working on another all drone CDr ep that is called First Element for now.

Anyhow, I'm at work on the music that will comprise of what will hopefully turn out to be the first Warning Light CD or LP, we'll see.

Guitarsss

I love guitars. I have three of them, a Hagstrom, a Harmony and an Epiphone I've been using alot lately. Even though this project is rather avantgarde, I like alot of music

Some of my favorite guitar albums:

- CAN "Tago Mago". It's a great album in general, but listen to those guitars... Every track has great, intricate guitar work.
- Public Image Ltd. "Metal Box". Keith Levene might be one of the most underrated guitar players ever, he manages to keep the sounds fresh over the course of a long album. There have been alot of imitators since then, but no one seems to be in the same league as Keith.
- Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band "Safe as Milk". Damn, bluesy-rockin-noodly guitar that's heavy on the treble mostly but still manages to utilize some really tasteful fuzz.
- Television "Marquee Moon". This one's obvious too, but it's hard not to listen to that title song and enjoy one of the best guitar players of the punk era.
- Spacemen 3 "The Perfect Prescription" There's alot of great guitar on this album, but that "lead" on "Call the Doctor" is a great sublime example of guitar.
- Black Sabbath "Black Sabbath Vol4" Really, any of their first five albums could be on here, this is just the one I've liked so much the past couple of years.
- Jesus and Mary Chain "Psychocandy" They did the whole fuzzy thing so well, it's a wonder to think so many have tried to do it since...
- Landing "Oceanless" Possibly the album that has the most to do with this project, the endless guitar sound of this band is something I've listened to countless times.

We played a really fun show in Asheville NC last Friday that finally featured new member C Daresta on bass. It was a little more raucous that other Warning Light shows have been, but that's a-ok.

The Bridge Tape

I've been working on an mini album called The Bridge Tape under the bandname Hospital Whites. I think this is going to be a name I use for a while to put out noisy, dubby, quasi industrial type stuff for a while, mostly on tape.

Hopefully, if I get my act together, The Bridge Tape will be ready in the next few weeks.
